Point #1
New Zealand have earned their first ever point in World Cup play, having lost their previous three matches in 1982, their only other World Cup appearance. The All Whites played to a 1-1 draw with Slovakia when, in second half stoppage time, Shane Smeltz lofted a lovely ball from the left flank in to Winston Reid who deftly snapped a header off of the back post and into the net. The jubilant Reid ripped off his shirt in celebration of the momentous occasion in New Zealand football history. He was subsequently shown a yellow card. On Sunday, the All Whites face a tough test when they take on Italy. The Azzurri are the defending world champions.
